The Fisheries Management Division is organized into a Hatchery Section, Research and Management Section and Habitat and Compliance. This position exists within the Habitat and Compliance Section's Aquatic Invasive Species Program. The AIS Program is charged with coordinating AIS activities performed by NMDGF personnel and its partners.
This is a seasonal position (May - September).
Why does the job exist?
Watercraft inspectors will interact with the boating public in order to provide outreach/education materials and conduct inspections on watercraft prior to and after boating on a New Mexico waterbody. Inspectors will need to effectively communicate with boaters in order to identify watercraft deemed high risk for harboring Aquatic Invasive Species. Watercraft suspected of carrying aquatic invasive species will receive a hot water decontamination as a method to remove and kill aquatic invasive species.
How does it get done?
Watercraft inspectors will converse with the boating public in order to obtain information regarding risk of the watercraft harboring aquatic invasive species. Inspections are conducted by physically looking for attached biological material or standing water on a conveyance. Decontaminations are conducted through the use of a hot water/high pressure unit.

As the lead agency for statewide aquatic invasive species program activities, hired personnel will assist the aquatic invasive species program by conducting watercraft inspections and decontaminations in order to reduce the risk of zebra mussel, quagga mussel or other aquatic invasive species introduction.
Ideal Candidate
The Fisheries Management Division is responsible for the statewide management of New Mexico's aquatic resources. As the lead agency for statewide aquatic invasive species program activities, hired personnel will assist the aquatic invasive species program by conducting watercraft inspections and decontaminations in order to reduce the risk of zebra mussel, quagga mussel or other aquatic invasive species introduction.
Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years directly related experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
This position will require the employee to work long hours, during weekends and holidays and through extreme weather conditions (wind, hot temperatures, etc.). Employee will be expected to be on their feet for long periods of time and will on occasion may need to lift up to 25 lbs. Employee will often work independently in remote locations. Duty location: Ute Lake near Logan, NM; Conchas Reservoir near Tucumcari, NM; or other New Mexico water bodies as assigned.
