The mission of the Administrative Hearing Office (AHO) is to adjudicate tax, property, and motor vehicle-related administrative hearings in a fair, efficient, and impartial manner independent of the executive agency that is a party to the proceeding.

Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to conduct and adjudicate administrative hearings of all types for the AHO as assigned by the Chief Hearing Officer (CHO). The primary cases that this position adjudicates involve driver's license revocations for DWI under the Implied Consent Act and all other types of hearings under the Motor Vehicle Code. This position may also adjudicate basic to moderately complex administrative hearings in any other hearing program at the Administrative Hearings Office, including tax protests, Medicaid fraud expediated proceedings, and various other state agencies requiring assistance from the Administrative Hearings Office for adjudication of their administrative hearings. This position also may conduct trainings about the hearing process for various hearing participants including law enforcement officers and legal practitioners.

Minimum Qualification
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Employment Requirements
All Attorney classifications must be and remain licensed as an attorney, in good standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorney and in good standing by the highest court of another state and eligible pursuant to the limited license provisions (See Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting: late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Travel is required. Possible exposure to irate clientele. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints.

How does it get done?
Duties for this position include:
- Maintaining a full hearing docket (typically more than 350 hearings per year) primarily consisting of ICA license revocation hearings and other matters under the Motor Vehicle Code including medical hearings, dealer license issues and misrepresentation of identity
- Conducting when necessary, scheduling hearings and other pre-hearing conference, ruling on evidentiary questions, developing/maintaining a complete record of the proceeding, and controlling the conduct of the litigants to ensure a fair and orderly hearing process
- Researching, preparing, and efficiently write coherent, well-reasoned, and legally supported decisions and orders after each case hearing in compliance with statutory deadlines
- Travel to hearing locations across the state to conduct hearings in the required statutory location
