The Early Childhood Education and Care Department was established on July 1, 2020. The Department's aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico. That means coordinating a continuum of programs from prenatal to five, and ensuring that families in every corner of the state can access the services they need.

Why does the job exist?
This position ensures compliance with the applicable State and Federal Regulations for the Registered and Licensed Home Providers in order to protect the health, safety, and development of the children of New Mexico.
How does it get done?
The purpose of this position is to conduct surveys of registered & licensed childcare home providers to determine compliance with applicable regulations, investigate complaints, incidents and conduct follow up surveys. This position is to provide training and technical assistance to registered and licensed childcare home providers in order to improve the quality of childcare services in the state. Among their responsibilities, Child Care Specialists conduct home visits, field complaints and referrals to determine appropriate action timely, and plan for and participate in hearings across the state.
Who are the customers?
All non-licensed and licensed childcare homes within the state of New Mexico who are intending to participate in the child and adult care food program or the childcare services programs.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in Early Childhood Education, child development, family studies, human development, human services, psychology, public policy, sociology, or social work. Additionally, they will have hands-on experience working with children in a professional setting.
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience as a social or community coordinator and / or social worker assistant. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Direct client interaction and some travel may be required.
