We achieve this mission by maintaining responsive and high-quality surveillance systems, maintaining effective collaborations at the federal and state levels, and by providing subject matter expertise on these conditions.
Why does the job exist?
This position will provide technical expertise for the improvement of infectious disease surveillance systems to provide better, faster, and actionable insights for public health decision-making. As technology to manage large data sets has improved and healthcare and public health data resources have become more plentiful, it is imperative that NMDOH leverage these resources and develop efficient surveillance methods to monitor diseases and identify interventions for prevention and control. Federal funding for public health data modernization has created the opportunity to apply new tools and approaches that are arising around the country so that NMDOH can improve the completeness, quality, and timeliness of our surveillance data and ensure these data are used to reduce the burden of infectious diseases. Skills in public health data science are needed to help implement the modernization strategy in New Mexico.
How does it get done?
This position will support efficient and high quality infectious disease surveillance programs with responsibilities including :
- Project management and planning to strengthen systems, prepare for emergencies, and meet grant requirements
- Current understanding of health information technology to improve systems
- Data quality management for system automation and performance monitoring
- Data analytic and reporting expertise to assure the proper use of surveillance data
- Collaboration with other data scientists working on surveillance data modernization, analysis, and reporting
- Planning for data preparedness to respond effectively to emerging infectious diseases
Who are the customers?
The customers are initially the staff and programs who implement and use public health surveillance data to improve public health. The ultimate customers, however, are the residents of New Mexico who seek better health and quality of life.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have four (4) years of public health experience in infectious diseases and public health surveillance. They will have academic training in data science methods and applied experience with data quality management, electronic health data, and technologies to improve case finding, data cleaning, data linkage, and data quality. The ideal candidate will blend strong data science skills with effective planning, communication, and partnership skills.
Minimum Qualification
Master's degree in Epidemiology, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Health Informatics, or related Master's degree field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel is required.
