The mission of the State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) is to protect the lives and property of New Mexico residents and guests from the devastating effects of fire. This goal is accomplished through promotion of public safety and fire prevention programs, as well as resources distributed to the New Mexico fire departments for fire protection services. The SFMO carries out its mission through four bureaus : Code Enforcement, Fire Investigations, Fire Service Support, and the Fire Training Academy.
The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) works to protect the people of New Mexico and the nation through a comprehensive and coordinated program of mitigating hazards, preparing for emergencies, preventing attacks, and recovering from disasters regardless of cause. Our department prepares for a wide variety of emergencies, including wildfires, flooding, health crises, and domestic attacks. When necessary, the state assists localities whose capabilities are overwhelmed, and DSHEM serves as the conduit for federal assistance. Our work in emergency management is coordinated around the five mission areas of the National Preparedness Goal : prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery.
DHSEM also coordinates with state and local law enforcement, as well as federal partners like the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to obtain, analyze, and distribute intelligence on possible threats to public safety. Additionally, our department facilitates and distributes tens of millions of dollars in federal grants to New Mexico communities every year. DHSEM also works closely with customs and border officials to secure our nation's borders.
This position is the Bureau Chief for the Fire Training academy located in Socorro, New Mexico.
Why does the job exist?
This position manages all operations and personnel assigned to the New Mexico Fire Fighters Training Academy, This position is responsible for developing training programs within the State as required in New Mexico State statue 59A-52 "The State Fire Marshal" and the development of New Mexico State Administrative Code NMAC 10-25-11"Fire Fighting Qualification system", maintaining compliance and certification of testing with All IFSAC (International Fire Service Accreditation Congress) and Pro Board procedures, Maintain compliance with all EPA NM Environmental, Water testing, SCBA air quality, hose, pump, ladder and any other testing that is a requirement for the NMFFTA. Work on developing certificate programs that can be conducted at remote locations thought the state. The NMFFTA will work with local collages and come up with a fee schedule to utilize the facility to complete these courses. the Fire Fighters Training academy will strive elevate the safety considerations of New Mexico Firefighters through training. Fire Trainings are conducted in accordance with New Mexico State statue, the National Fire Protection Association, International Fire Accreditation Counsel, PRO Board Code, and other national accepted practices. This position provides oversight and technical expertise during all course material revisions and approvals, testing and other items related to the NMFFTA.
How does it get done?
This position functions as the Bureau Chief over the Firefighters Training Academy of Fire Marshals Division. The NMFFTA has the statuary responsibility of developing and conducting Training to fire fighters in the state ensuring highest quality of training to the firefighters of New Mexico. All NMFFTA efforts are in line with the Fire Marshal Division goals and objectives established by the State Fire Marshal and approved by DSHEM. This position is responsible for the supervision and operation of the NMFFTA. this position supervises 16 full time staff members and other temporary adjunct instructor staff. this position is requires to work with different agencies to conduct / and create training programs that can be delivered throughout the State. ensuring that all staff complete required trainings set forth by DHSEM and the State Fire Marshal. Develop short-and long- term goals and objectives for the fire academy.
Ensures that all department personnel receive proper training and are equipped with the necessary tools to perform their jobs safely and effectively. Prepare the department¿s budget request and administer the approved budget. Perform personnel evaluations and recommend disciplinary action when necessary. Plan and coordinate special events hosted by the fire academy.

Ideal Candidate
Ideal Candidate :
- Experience working with hazardous materials.
- Bachelor's degree in fire science, emergency management, or related field
- 10 years of experience as a firefighter, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
- Proven experience developing and implementing fire safety programs and training programs.
- Strong understanding of NFPA standards and other fire codes
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
Minimum Qualification
A Bachelor's degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a light strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include management, supervisory and / or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.

Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Situations may warrant work in disaster field office(s) or a mobile operations center. Subject to recall during disasters and other emergencies. Work on weekends, holidays and shift work may be required during emergencies and / or disaster situations or as business requires. State travel required.
