The Game and Fish Warden Sergeant contributes to the agency by providing positive, professional supervision and leadership to district wildlife officers (DWO); coordinates and ensures DWO efforts are efficient and effective when delivering department programs and services; monitors and develops DWO competency through monitoring, instruction, coaching, and performance reviews (MEP) to strengthen job skills and contributions to the agency; and ensures that efforts in all areas of responsibility are positive and professional and guided by Department's mandates and responsibilities to meet goals and objectives of State laws and regulations, State Game Commission directives, Department administration, and Department plans and policies
How does it get done?
SUPERVISION OF STAFF - Consistent with SPO rules and procedures and DGF policies and procedures; develop employee performance evaluation forms that provide clear and concise job tasks and verify mutual understanding of expectations and conduct interim performance reviews as directed by SPO rule. Review employee performance appraisal forms and ratings with your immediate supervisor prior to final reviews with employees. Demonstrate and promote the following 6 expectations and responsibilities of all Sergeants.
1 - Promote a positive and professional attitude (Positive, Professional, One Department / One Team, instills enthusiastic mind set, mentions sincere and meaningful methods of handing out praise and recognizing good work, recognizes poor attitude and takes corrective steps in a timely and effective manner)

LAW ENFORCEMENT/COMPLIANCE: Conduct and administer a professional law enforcement program for the supervisory district that gains compliance with wildlife laws and regulations. Tasks included but are not limited to: Provide direction and oversight over supervisory district law enforcement efforts that deter wildlife violations, create deterrence among violators and potential violators through visibility and publicity arising from patrols, special operations, and prosecutions, gain compliance, and build public awareness of illegal activities and their resource impacts by coordinating and maintaining a professional and highly visible law enforcement program. Conduct and report applicable Law Enforcement responsibilities in accordance with State Statutes and procedures identified in the NMDGF Statewide Law Enforcement Operational Procedures. Maintain and improve law enforcement competency through continued professional training development, including compliance with DPS and Department mandates. Prepare officers for law enforcement encounters by ensuring periodic training, instruction, and practice in all appropriate law enforcement techniques and technologies.
WILDLIFE/ HABITAT / DEPREDATION MANAGEMENT: Provide for effective management of wildlife and their habitats including a professional and effective depredation and nuisance wildlife abatement program that provides relief to landowners and other affected citizens from property damage, annoyances and threats to public safety within the supervisory district. Tasks include, but are not limited to: Collect, analyze or seek to apply relevant data to wildlife management objectives and issues within the supervisory district. Maintain or improve resource management competency through continued professional training and development. Mentor, guide and assist DWO efforts with dissemination of information and educational materials to all interested publics in order to promote the agency and the wildlife resource with positive customer satisfaction and support. Encourage conservation officer concept by directing DWO efforts towards assisting NMDGF divisions wildlife management programs or projects to include, but not limited to, research, wildlife surveys, traps and transplants. Guide, direct and assist DWO with identifying potential habitat improvement projects and assist in their implementation. Mentor, guide and assist DWO efforts with investigating, documenting and providing professional depredation assistance in accordance with State Statutes, State Game Commission Rules and Department Policies and Procedures. Encourage and assist DWO to seek new and innovative approaches toward achieving long-term or permanent depredation relief for affected landowners that achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction. Oversee DWO depredation activities and coordinate efforts with Depredation Specialist, Wildlife Management Division personnel and Wildlife Services as necessary. Ensure DWO maintain annual certification and training in wildlife restraint. Coordinate DWO efforts to provide information/education to public to help alleviate wildlife conflicts. Submit district bear/lion nuisance reports as required by supervisor.
ADMINISTRATION: Conduct and participate in administrative duties to meet agency needs, mandates and directives. Tasks include but are not limited to: Submit all required reports as per Department policies, procedures and accepted standards (complete, legible, accurate and timely). Ensure DWO's are maintaining vehicles, equipment and uniforms as to portray a professional public image. Maintain Department facilities and lands as per policy and accepted standards and ensure DWO's are doing the same. Ensure all equipment transfers are completed in timely manner. Coordinate and conduct district meetings as necessary for organization and planning efforts and to provide certified training and information to supervisory district. Ensure all employee evaluations (MEP's) are developed, implemented and closed as per Agency policy and state statute mandates. Coordinate DWO's efforts to conduct Conservation Education, NASP, Hunter's Education and all other public outreach programs to meet agency mandates and community needs. If a certified DPS instructor: he/she is to assist and create curriculum, instruct and participate in mandated training in your field to meet Department goals and objectives. Conduct other administrative duties as required or assigned as per policy, regulation, laws and accepted standards.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field with at least twelve (12) credit hours that pertain to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification; and three (3) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management, or wildlife law enforcement. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be a certified NM peace officer and have successfully completed the NMDGF Conservation School.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a Driver's License, Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must be a certified NM peace officer and have successfully completed the NM DGF Conservation School.
Working Conditions
Irregular hours, overtime, travel and overnight trips. Weekend and occasional holiday work. The job requires working outdoors, often in inclement weather.
