Why does the job exist?
The position will perform operation of medium to heavy duty motorized equipment and powered stationary equipment in construction and maintenance of roads and highways in a safe and efficient manner to maintain interstates, roads, roadways and highways for the safety of the traveling public.
How does it get done?
By supervising a crew of six (6) subordinates. Assigning employees to perform maintenance activities on a daily basis and ensuring their work is complete. Entering daily maintenance activities into the Maintenance Management System. Approving timesheets for employees on a weekly basis. Providing customer service to the traveling public.
Who are the customers?
The traveling public and pedestrians.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following areas :
- Operating a blade to perform finish blade work.
- Using the highway maintenance management system.
- Supervisory experience; managing a field supply budget and stockpiles.
- Assisting in emergency response situations related to highway operations.
- Dealing with irate customers.
- Managing multiple crews during winter weather activities.
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loaders, five (5) and ten (10) yard dump trucks, self-propelled broom, rollers, or mowers. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience. Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) upon hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and / or Hazmat endorsement.

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and / or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment DOT physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess a valid Driver's License and a Class A CDL at time of hire. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, wind, rain and snow, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough / rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical expenditure; irregular hours day or night; to include but not limited to standing for extended time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; subject to call out for weather or accidents and / or emergencies on short notice; work may also be performed in an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers; use of hands to finger, handle or feel while performing various assigned maintenance duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include : close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; climbing, reaching, kneeling, crawling to perform equipment maintenance. Exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes / chemicals, airborne particles and / or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed / high volume traffic; load noises.
