The mission of the Administrative Hearing Office (AHO) is to adjudicate tax, property, and motor vehicle-related administrative hearings in a fair, efficient, and impartial manner independent of the executive agency that is a party to the proceeding.

Why does the job exist?
This position exists to provide paralegal support to Hearing Officers conducting tax hearings, primarily in Santa Fe. Responsibilities include court clerk duties, managing case records, filing legal documents, drafting correspondence and orders, and preparing appeal records. The role has recently expanded to support additional agency hearing programs critical to revenue generation.
How does it get done?
Duties for this position include :
- Providing legal support for tax and agency hearings, including scheduling and case management
- Serving as court clerk, filing and managing legal pleadings
- Organizing and maintaining hearing files and records
- Preparing and mailing notices of hearing and research service contacts
- Conducting legal research and assisting hearing officers during complex hearings
- Mailing decisions, updating case databases, and maintaining hearing logs
- Compiling hearing statistics and preparing records for appeals
- Communicating legal process details to taxpayers, attorneys, and the public
Who are the customers?
The Administrative Hearings Office leadership and staff. Indirect customers are the State of New Mexico's governor, state auditor, state legislators and the public.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have :
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Paralegal, Legal Science, Business, English, History, Communications, Psychology, and / or Sociology and two (2) years of relevant experience to include the preparation and review of legal documents and legal / policy research and analysis. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience or current enrollment with at least two (2) semesters in a Juris Doctorate program from an accredited school of law will substitute for required work experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
