The New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NM LEA) is an organizational unit of the Department of Public Safety (§ 9-19-7, Subparagraph C, NMSA 1978), controlled and supervised by policy set by the Law Enforcement Academy Board (§ 29-7-3, NMSA 1978). The NM LEA is established to provide a planned program of basic training and in-service law enforcement training by furnishing Instruction and seminars to consistently upgrade law enforcement within the state (§ 29-7-2, NMSA 1978).
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to support the mission of the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy including statutorily defined testing and certification. Provides training and oversight of New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Cadets, Law Enforcement Officers, and Public Safety Telecommunicators at the Department of Public Safety.
How does it get done?
This position develops and instructs various basic, advanced, and in-service training courses for first responders. This role serves as a subject matter expert for competencies in skills and techniques required of Law Enforcement Instructors. This position assists the Lead Instructor in keeping basic police officer training and in alignment with best practices. Counsels trainess on performance, professional, and academic issues. This position prepares, utilizes, and maintains training equipment. Ensures safety practices and protocols are followed. Serves as a technical or subject matter expert in one or more law enforcement / public safety disciplines.

Ideal Candidate
Bachelor's degree in any field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification and four (4) or more years' experience in law enforcement patrol operations, law enforcement training, or criminal Investigations plus two (2) years law enforcement teaching experience. Current instructor credentialing in law enforcement training disciplines.
Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in any field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification and six (6) years experience, (2) years of which must be law enforcement teaching experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must hold a current New Mexico Police Officer certification as set forth in §297-6 NMSA 1978 or be eligible for Certification by Waiver upon hire and / or must complete Certification by Waiver within six (6) months of hire, and currently hold the minimum of a New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy general instructor certificate or Equivalent as set forth in §10.29.4.8 NMAC.
Employment Requirements
Must hold a current New Mexico Police Officer certification as set forth in §29-7-6 NMSA 1978 or be eligible for Certification by Waiver upon hire and / or must complete Certification by Waiver within six (6) months of hire and currently hold the minimum of a New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy general instructor certificate or Equivalent as set forth in §10.29.4.8 NMAC.
Working Conditions
Much of the work is conducted in an office environment where the specialist develops training materials, conducts administrative tasks, and collaborates with colleagues. Work in training facilities where they deliver hands-on training sessions, workshops, and simulations. Typically, this role operates on a standard work schedule during business hours, Monday through Friday. Some flexibility in scheduling may be required to accommodate training sessions that could occur outside regular hours, or on weekends. There may be occasional travel to attend meetings, workshops, or conferences related to training and development. Some events may be outdoors or in various types of weather and light conditions.
