Why does the job exist?
The Collections Manager is a key position at the New Mexico Military Museum. They will be the steward of and oversee the care of the permanent collection. Our collection is comprised of Historic Objects, Library, Archives, Antique Firearms, Military Vehicles, and Fine Art. The Collections Manager is responsible for the overall management of collections storage, including safe and appropriate locations for all objects. They will manage location tracking, and the safe movement of collection and loan objects to and from storage locations. Other principal duties include cataloging objects, Database management using Proficio Elements, photographing objects, and rehousing objects into permanent storage. The Collection Manager will participate in developing and curating exhibitions for the museum. The Collections Manager will be supervised by and work closely with the Museum Director and fellow museum staff. The Collection Manager will train and supervise Collection Volunteers and other duties as assigned.

The Collections Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the permanent collection. The position will create and maintain object collection records (both manual and electronic); complete condition reports of museum objects; ensure that all objects have appropriate locations in storage, and that all locations are recorded in database; organize the handling, packing and inspection of objects entering or leaving the museum and gallery; manage the movement of works to and from Collections Storage. Retrieve and replace objects from storage for research; exhibition and documentation purposes; Participate in collections inventories, initiate and generate relevant documentation; assist in the movement and display of artworks; participate in exhibition installation, deinstallation, preparation and staging for exhibitions; assist with the pickup and delivery of works of art for new acquisitions, exhibitions or conservation; and provide in person access to collections for internal and external users.
