The Office of General Counsel represents the Department of Transportation, it's senior staff and all DOT employees in various areas of the law.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The paralegal advanced position within the Office of General Counsel (OGC) Operations and Finance (OAF) Practice Group provides advanced level support to NMDOT lawyers involved in complex civil litigation matters involving construction claims, construction-related procurement protests and related appeals, administrative law matters, rule making activities, and environmental or water law cases.
This position is essential to the OGC ability to effectively defend the NMDOT in suc litigation and administrative appeals;

Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting with extended periods of sitting, concentrating, standing, bending, climbing reaching and lifting of up to 35 lbs. Exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage are also anticipated working conditions.

- Understanding of the function and jurisdiction of federal, state and local courts.
- Ability to work alone and without direct attorney guidance.
