Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position, which is assigned to Sumner Lake State Park, is to provide effective law enforcement, lake patrols and visitor management, ensure compliance with Division Rules and Regulations, Policy and Procedures and enforce the NM Boat Act. Provide law enforcement administrative functions involving citations, criminal complaints, arrests/detention bookings and official boat accidents and incident reports. Provide boating safety classes to visitors and surrounding community schools, military basis, and other agencies. Operate various types of vessels, power tools, and heavy equipment. Clean, inspect and maintain courtesy docks, ramps, parking lots. vessels, fleet and boating program and park facilities to ensure safe operations for staff and visitor use. Maintain inland waterway marking buoy system in accordance to guidelines and standards. Maintain and map locations of all aids to navigation to include buoys, docks, ramps, etc. Complete daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports, fuel logs, vessel and fleet logs, collect revenues from visitors, provide visitor and boating information, prepare quotes for boating needs. This position will monitor park operations, assist with general functions of the park administration, fee enhancement, land based law enforcement, and fulfill managerial requirements when the Park Superintendents or Park Managers are unavailable.

Provide public safety and customer service by responding to visitor needs and emergencies, such as perform rescue operations, issue citations, make arrests, take statements, conduct investigations, complete reports, and attend court. Complete daily, weekly and monthly logs and reports. Request and attend law enforcement training to meet requirements of a commissioned officer. Operate various office equipment, power tools, vessels, and heavy equipment. Perform maintenance duties on grounds, roads, trails, park facilities, and vehicle fleet.

Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park. Visitors throughout the State of New Mexico and surrounding states, who are boaters, campers, hikers, birders and fishermen. For United States Coast Guard and State of New Mexico.

Minimum Qualification

Associate degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice, or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice, and/or wildlife management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be a certified NM peace officer.
Employment Requirements

Incumbent must submit to and pass an extensive background investigation and the prescribed physical fitness, medical and psychological examinations. Must be a certified Peace Officer. Must be eligible for certification by waiver of previous training in accordance with provisions of Section 29-1-10 NMSA 1978. As a safety sensitive law enforcement position, incumbent will be subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
  • Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location.
  • Moderate to extensive travel in region/state wide area.
  • Incumbent is required to live in park housing, if available.
  • Weekend and holiday work required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions

This position is a law enforcement position and requires the incumbent to be in optimum physical condition. Lifting, bending, standing running, are above average. This position is placed in strenuous situations where physical strength may be necessary to restrain or stop criminal activity. This position works outdoors 70% of the time and is exposed to machinery, adverse weather conditions, and some travel. This position is also administrative. The use of various hand and power tools is required on occasion. Requires working inside and outside, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of park and region work, there is a risk of injury, animal or insect bites, and exposure to infection, dust, allergens, chemicals, and petroleum products. Shift work is required on weekends, holidays and during events held at the park or at another site. Emergency situations may arise requiring extended hours of work or return to work after normal hours. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is essential.
