Why does the job exist?
The Plant and Systems Operator is responsible for inspecting and performing regular preventative maintenance and repairs of the building, systems, structures and grounds. In addition, this position provides technical assistance to staff on topics related to structural stability and functionality; implementing plans for capital improvements projects and contributing to the long-term facility plans.
How does it get done?
Under the supervision of the Eastern Regional Staff Manager and in close coordination with the Northern facilities staff, this position monitors and implements facilities maintenance, repairs and capital improvements.
This position is responsible for ensuring that facility equipment and building systems are functional and maintained, inspected, and that maintenance needs of the structures, building systems grounds and utilities are recognized, prioritized, and addressed.
Under the supervision of the Eastern Regional Staff Manager, the position is responsible for monitoring HVAC, boiler, septic pumps, and fire suppression systems and for inspecting building envelope structures for leaks and cracks, and for making recommendations to the Staff Manager and North Region Team for repair and maintenance.
Under the supervision of the Eastern Regional Staff Manager, the position will solicit contractors to obtain quotes and submit bids/quotes, issue purchase orders and to initiate repairs monitor contractors work for compliance with specification.
The position will work closely with the facilities Division and with Site directors and staff to ensure the safety and security of staff, visitors and collections at all times. The position will provide technical assistance on all facets of the maintenance of the structures, operating systems, grounds, buildings and utilities.

Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years construction experience to include familiarity with application of building codes and regulations, basic electrical, plumbing, ventilation, maintenance. andor custodial operations; building trade experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field andor direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions such as hot, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow.
Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals and may include exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/pr airborne particles, rough/rugged terrain, infected trash, exposure to hazardous chemicals, insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, stressful situations, subject to falls and bruise, considerable physical strain.
Interaction with the public, state officials by phone, email or in person, irregular hours day or night, subject to call out for emergencies, heavy lifting, sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. May include temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays extended or irregular hours day or night; and call-out away from post of duty to include nighttime work as applicable are required.
