The Survey & Lands Engineering (SLE) Division measures and provides geospatial information necessary for the development of design, construction, and maintenance of the New Mexico State Transportation System.
SLE supports all surveying and mapping activities required to fulfill the NMDOT¿s obligation to transportation projects in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The Division is comprised of two distinct Sections, the Survey Section and Lands Engineering Section. Each section supports, manages, and delivers various products utilizing state-of-the-art mapping and surveying technology. The Survey Section is supported by the Geodetic Unit, Geospatial Data Unit, and four Survey Field Units. The Lands Engineering Section is supported by the Right-of-Way (ROW) & Monumentation Mapping Unit and the Verification & Research Unit.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to assist in providing leadership to Survey Units to fulfill the NMDOT's obligation to survey transportation projects to meet operational needs and support the development of construction plans in support of the annual construction program, State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP). The Professional Surveyor II devotes a substantial portion of time assisting in assigning and leading work of full-time employees.
How does it get done?
This position coordinates survey efforts for projects from field to finish with responsibilities for providing right of way and mapping support services for STIP. Provides technical expertise and guidance support to areas and offices within the agency on matter relating to surveying and mapping inquires and needs. Additionally, this position will continue to meet with the Department staff to assure all surveys are clear and developed within the scope of the projects. Assists in leading assigned survey requests by coordinating, scheduling, and tracking progress of projects.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience / education in the following areas :
- Professional level experience in construction, property, right-of-way surveying, use of field equipment and instruments, survey computations, planning and preparation, surface modeling and GPS-Geomatics software experience.
- Use with : Trimble GPS surveying instruments; Trimble data controllers; Trimble Business Center; and Autodesk / AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Minimum Qualification
Licensed Professional Surveyor in the State of New Mexico with a minimum of six (6) years of relevant surveying experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Employment requires successful completion of pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
All applicants for the Professional Surveying Classifications must be licensed in accordance with Engineering and Surveying Practice Act, Sections 61-23-1 through 61-23-32 NMSA 1978 and 16.39.1 through 16.39.8 NMAC, as applicable. Registration as a Professional Surveyor by the NM Licensing Board. You must include your license or certificate number in the "License" section of the application form.
Working Conditions
Office setting, exposure to Visual / Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Extensive statewide overnight travel, exposure to construction equipment, traffic, heights, heavy lifting, insects, pollen, rough terrain and inclement weather conditions. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and physical expenditure is necessary.
