The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters' safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations.
Why does the job exist?
The Senior Firefighter job purpose is to lead a small group of assigned crew members to perform fire suppression activities to locate, control and manage wildland fires in diverse wildland interface and remote settings by applying an understanding of fire behavior, topography of the area, and extensive training in fire management work, involving the use of hand and power tools in felling trees or snags, operating pumpers, building fire lines, burning out, backfiring, mopping up and patrolling lines, and to conduct hazardous fuels reduction treatments when wildfires are not active.
How does it get done?
Perform moderately heavy, physical labor associated with wildland fire suppression, prescribed burning and forest restoration in rugged environmental conditions. Apply basic hand crew tactics and air operations. Prepare and mobilize for assignments. Mentor assigned resources in safe firefighting and transportation practices. Apply appropriate Fireline tactics. Use maps, compass, GPS and navigation tools. Use firing devices under supervision. Provide feedback to aerial resources and status updates to supervisor. Collect and report weather. Program and operate multichannel radios. Ensure lookouts, communications, escape routes and safety zones are established and known. Apply standard firefighting orders and watch out situations. Participate in training and demonstrate fire prevention, pre-suppression, and suppression techniques. Use and maintain fire finders, chainsaws, pumps, vehicles, cache, quarters and grounds. Conduct fuels reduction, forest restoration and reforestation activities.
Who are the customers?
The job will service the citizens of the state of New Mexico to ensure the management and protection of the State's forests, watersheds, and natural resources. There are numerous customers serviced to include state, private, local government, federal, tribal, non-profit, non-governmental and intra-state customers.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following :
- Wildland fire administration and report writing experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication with experience leading training, education outreach and
public speaking.
Minimum Qualification
High school education or equivalent and two (2) seasons of wildland fire response. Must have NWCG qualifications as Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1) as specified in PMS 310-1. (Season means a total of 90 days fire response experience within a calendar year).
Employment Requirements
Applicant must submit documentation of current wildland fire qualifications with resume and possess a valid Driver's License
Working Conditions
Work will be a mixture of office and field settings, exposure to visual / video display terminal, computer and
other hand-held and electronic devises for extended periods; but will also include extensive field settings
with exposure to extreme weather and environmental conditions and hazards including smoke, dust, insects,
animals, wildland fire, heavy equipment, mechanized equipment, noise, in remote and rugged terrain in
variable weather conditions. Ability to conduct long duration strenuous physical labor, hiking, while carrying
up to 45 pounds for extended periods of time up to 16-hrs per day. Diving motor vehicles and operating utility
vehicles, hand tools, chainsaws and other power tools may be required.
