The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, New Mexico, is a regional and statewide educational resource of space-related exhibits and exhibitions, local landmark, and destination for anyone who wants to understand the scope of space exploration throughout the world, New Mexico's central role in space exploration, and the dynamics that have shaped our view of the universe

Why does the job exist?

Working on the mountainside above Alamogordo, the Public Relations Specialist Supervisor maintains the brand, identity, and reputation of the NM Museum of Space History (NMMSH) and the NM Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA). This position is responsible for building and implementing strategies for their division's public relations, social media, website, and marketing efforts. The position works with the Director, Deputy Director, and Curator, as well as other staff and managers to continuously improve the museum's marketing and public relations. How does it get done?

Reporting directly to the Director, the Public Relations Specialist Supervisor serves as a designated spokesperson for the Division and responds to requests for information from the media, the public, and stakeholders. The position develops communications strategies for the Division in support of exhibitions, education, and outreach activities, events, and other sensitive issues, and collaborates with NMDCA's communications team on its master plan. They prepare and distribute news releases and media alerts, cultivate and maintain relationships with local and regional media outlets, send direct pitches and follow-up communications, write op-eds, develop press kit materials, and plan media events. They prepare or edit organizational publications for internal and external audiences, including newsletters, marketing collateral, and reports. They seek to understand the attitudes and concerns of community, employee, and public interest groups to establish and maintain

cooperative relationships between them and representatives from print, broadcast, and online journalism. They gauge public opinion through surveys, polls, and social media listening. In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, they assist with development advertising and promotional campaign development and implementation and special marketing events. They maintain and manage content on websites and assist in e-communications efforts. They strategize on and post content to the Division's social media platforms and provide content for the NMDCA's main social media pages They track, evaluate, and share results of PR and social media efforts. They coordinate scheduling and logistics as necessary. This position also works closely with the Division Director on writing and designing of exhibit materials. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Residents from across New Mexico, museum visitors from all over the world, internal museum staff, the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, and NMMSH managers are primary beneficiaries of work done by this position. Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is creative, curious, well organized, and has an aptitude for administrative management and financial operations. This is an opportunity to be an integral part of the New Mexico Museum of Space History and the state's Department of Cultural Affairs.

1. A passion for excellence in public service.

2. Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, museum studies, history (applicable to primary role support), English, or creative writing.

3. Confident communicator and presenter with strong writing, editing, proofreading (with AP stylebook expertise), layout and design, professional printing / publishing skills.

4. Excellent project and time management skills with the ability to work with multiple and diverse groups of clients.

5. A wide degree of creativity, a strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media / social media, and expertise learning online tools and resources.

6. Self-motivated with a positive, professional, and flexible approach to their role.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Publications, Journalism, Communications or related field and two (2) years of experience in public relations. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License and must pass and maintain Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico as a condition of continued employment in order to drive museum vehicles (sedan, cargo van, pickup, and / or passenger van).

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with sitting and extensive use of computer and telephone, occasional after-hours presence required onsite at events, occasional in-state travel. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
