All positions at the NM Public Education Department are based in Santa Fe, however some may operate through our Albuquerque office based on home address and space availability.

The School Transportation Bureau establishes standards for operation and equipment, inspects buses, conducts on-site visits to ensure accountability and compliance, and develops an annual appropriation request to finance the school transportation program. Audits are conducted to ensure that budgets, records, inspections, etc., are in compliance with regulations and safety procedures. Other duties include certifying school bus CDL examiners, driving instructors and inspectors. Provision of safe, efficient, and economical transportation to all eligible students is the objective of the bureau.
Why does the job exist?
Oversee and manage the financial aspects of the Transportation Program with an annual distribution of over $100 million. This includes: approving annual budgets for 89 school districts and charter schools receiving transportation funding; approving budget adjustment requests; administration of school bus inventory; auditing records; collecting and analyzing reports concerning the transportation operation; maintaining databases and scheduling replacements for school owned buses and contractor owned buses (approximately 2,300 replacement school buses).
How does it get done?
By Answering all constituents questions pertaining to the financial aspects of the transportation distribution and formulas
Answering all technical questions during legislative committee hearings pertaining to the overall financial aspects of the transportation program
Calculating the annual transportation operational formula
Approving school district transportation budgets
Approving budget adjustment requests
Recommending approval of school bus replacements to the Division Director
Approving the distribution of funds to school districts based on the operational formula
Calculate the operational formula
Analyzing and verifying the 80th and 120th day transportation membership information.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration and two (2) years of directly related experience in budgeting, accounting, and/or auditing. Any combination of education from a college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. For use at the State Investment Council only: any budgeting, accounting, and/or auditing experience is acceptable.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
