Why does the job exist?
The purpose of the position is to provide regulatory oversight and review of permit application and modifications, and audit activities that relate to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Hazardous Waste Facility Permits at the US Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The position will review and assess hazardous waste practices, audit related documents and permit applications and modification for administrative completeness and technical adequacy, prepare public notice documents and conduct oversight of facility activities.
How does it get done?
Support of WIPP Project for permitting and waste characterization related items which includes:
Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. However, work outside normal hours may be required to participate in public meetings. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Some travel required, as necessary, 15-20 percent.

- Review permit applications, permit modification requests, and other technical documents and reports for technical adequacy, completeness and compliance with WIPP Permit requirements
- Evaluate public participation and comments and develop responses
- Review generator site waste characterization procedures and final audit reports for technical adequacy, completeness, and compliance with WIPP Permit requirements
- Observe and consult with NMED management, audit team and generator site personnel during facility waste characterization audits
- Coordinate and communicate with coworkers, management, other bureaus, WIPP facility, and other stakeholders
- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment
- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations
