What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Clerk position at State of North Carolina - Clerk of Superior Court?
Description of Work
SALARY GRADE: Flat Rated
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Pull/Review court calendar.
- Pull case files/shuck to prepare for court.
- Bring required forms, pens and necessary items to courtroom.
- Sort case files during calendar call.
- Answer questions from attorneys, the parties involved in the cases, and the judge.
- Start recorder, tabs and labels entries throughout the recording.
- Administer oaths.
- Listen to court proceedings and process court orders and judgments (e.g., records the official proceedings of the court on the hard copy of the calendar during court).
- Maintain exhibit log.
- Print copies of judges' orders.
- Re-file cases after court sessions.
- Discuss and explain court rules and procedures to attorneys, the public and others by phone or in person.
- Identify and provide applicable forms and written instructions without providing recommendations as to any specific course of action.
- Establish and maintain case files (e.g., date-stamping, assigning a file number, issuing a summons, collecting filing fees, etc.).
- Complete cost sheets (indigent and pro se may require additional forms) and direct individuals to cashiering to pay required fees.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Knowledge of: NC general statutes; policies and procedures related to the local judicial district; civil proceedings and the Civil Case Processing System (VCAP); juvenile proceedings; Juvenile Case Tracking/Scheduling System (JWISE); eWarrants; eCourts; Odyssey Enterprise Justice, and general office and clerical procedures.
Skills in: basic math; active listening; managing a high volume of public interaction; effectively communicating both verbally and in writing; fast, accurate data entry; and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to: read and comprehend legal documents; interact diplomatically with a diverse group of people; multi-task; adjust to unexpected events; meet deadlines; organize and manage files; work independently; maintain confidentiality; and provide procedural information without giving legal advice.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 18 years of age. Craven County residents preferred.
Management prefers applicants with professional experience working in a courthouse or law office.
