This Marine Fisheries Biologist will serve as the lead for coordinating long-term monitoring programs for finfish and crustaceans in the Albemarle Sound Area. The employee will ensure that project goals are met, and procedures are followed for fishery dependent and independent research sampling programs. Employee will be responsible for extensive data QA/QC. Employee will serve in a supervisory role with duties including hiring, evaluation, work plan development, career growth, and weekly work assignments. A valid driver’s license is required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Statistically analyze dependent and independent data collected from sampling programs to restore, maintain, and enhance the commercial and recreational fisheries of the state of North Carolina particularly in the Albemarle Sound and coastal area.
  • Responsible for data analysis, preparation and review of technical reports, preparation of grant proposals for funding from federal and state sources and recommending management actions for finfish resources.
  • Participate in state management activities, as well as cooperate with other regional agencies in the management of the state’s commercial and recreational fisheries.
  • Prioritize and schedule biological sampling activities, conduct performance evaluations for subordinates, respond to public inquiries, participate in public meetings and hearings, and promote good relationships with the fishing public.
  • Must be able to work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment, must have strong organization skills, the ability to work with the public and technical staff, and the ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities.
  • Operate trucks, boats with outboard engines and trailer boats.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess
ALL the following:

  • Experience with biological principles and/or fisheries management.
  • Experience with manipulating, analyzing, and/or interpreting data.
  • Experience with boat operation.
  • Experience writing technical and/or scientific documents.


Applicants who were born after January 1, 1988, must be in compliance with the requirements for boating safety education, General Statute 75A-16.2.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
