NCDOT is looking for a highly motivated individual looking for a position with the potential of career advancement. This position will provide all state benefits including paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement.

This is an Engineering Technician I position located in the New Hanover Office, which includes both the District and Resident Engineer’s Offices, serving New Hanover and Brunswick Counties. This position involves technical work supporting technicians and engineers in construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, erosion control, traffic control, and permit and encroachment coordination. Work also includes assisting with driveway and utility coordination with developers and municipalities.

The selected candidate may be subject to non-traditional hours and may be required to work nights and weekends due to construction inspection needs or during inclement weather and disaster response events. This position may involve exposure to rough or uneven terrain and require working in adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. The ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds is required.

This position requires the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments involving the compilation, analysis, computation, editing, and processing of field data. The work involves limited decision-making and the use of judgment. The successful applicant must perform a full range of calculations and computations and be proficient in maintaining accurate records. Responsibilities include both fieldwork and administrative tasks such as reviewing plans, entering data, preparing records, and responding to public inquiries. Interaction with local governments, contractors, utility representatives, and the public is expected to ensure compliance with state engineering standards and procedures. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software
  • Experience in customer service and interacting with the general public


Additional Expectations:

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and /or construction surveying
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry

Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position, a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
