This position’s primary purpose is the preparation of marine craft for painting. Employees remove rust and loose paint, clean metal, and prepare all surfaces for primer by utilizing different machinery and tools. Assignments are received from the Marine Painter Supervisor who inspects the work for satisfactory completion.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Operate pneumatic chipper, needle gun and piston sealer for removal of rust and corrosion
- Operate slurry blast (dustless) machine, UHP (50,000psi) industrial style pressure washer, pneumatic sandblaster in blast pit for large items and bulk raw materials
- Sandblast or sand wash steel hull, super structure, and voids of ferries, dredges, barges, and workboats
- Apply primer coat to protect cleaned metal
- Assist in painting trim and decks of ferries, dredges, barges, and workboats
- Perform related duties as required
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT and Ferry Division’s drug, Fit-For-Duty, and cardiopulmonary function/respirator fit tests.
This position is located at the Ferry Shipyard at Manns Harbor
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Working knowledge of techniques used in the preparation of steel surfaces for painting.
- Skill in the use of sandblaster, chipper, and scaler.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to operate equipment for considerable periods of time and work aloft.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
