Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
- Experience in layout of traffic control in work zones
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal
- Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/ aerial device)
- Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques
Additional Expectations:
This position is subject to Emergency Call Back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances, which includes responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. This job will require work to be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
