About Us:

Our Unit is dedicated to establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products, ensuring they meet the highest standards and function as intended. We play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the North Carolina Highway System, in accordance with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Regulations.

Your Role:

The primary role of the Western Aggregate QC/QA Specialist in the Materials and Tests Unit (M&T) is to ensure the quality of materials at our aggregate quarries and sand pits. This individual will be responsible for conducting pre-certification of QC technicians, administering aggregate QC/QA classes/training, maintaining annual submittals, performing audits, and conducting investigations. 

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Certification and Training:

  • Conduct on-site visits to pre-qualify quarry technicians before they attend the Aggregate QC/QA class. Extensive travel, including overnight stays, is required.
  • Assist the Aggregates QC/QA Engineer in preparing teaching materials, such as manuals, handouts, PowerPoint presentations, and exams.
  • Conduct classes throughout the year at various locations across the state.
  • Provide hands-on training for laboratory testing as needed.

Documentation Management:

  • Manage annual documentation updates for Ownership and QC Plans.
  • Ensure on-site laboratories are properly equipped and technicians are professionally trained.
  • Maintain a list of approved off-site private laboratories for QC purposes.

Assessment, Auditing, and Investigation:

  • Conduct random visits to production sites to assess and validate performance.
  • Perform annual audits to review Quality Management System documentation at quarries and sand plants.
  • Assist the Aggregates QC/QA Engineer in investigating non-compliant materials.

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of engineering theories, techniques, practices, and procedures relating to aggregate materials, sampling and test procedures.
  • Experience in the use of applicable software including Microsoft Office and HiCAMS.
  • Experience coordinating and communicating effectively with other team members to achieve a common goal.
  • Experience creating and maintaining routine written programs, records and reports.
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles of statistics.

Additional Expectations:

This position requires a highly motivated individual who is able to work independently as well as part of a team. The successful candidate will have strong work ethic standards with a technical background in engineering, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical personnel. Experience managing personnel is desired. Must have the ability lift samples and equipment weighing up to 70lbs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to wear safety glasses and other personal protective equipment.

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
