Salary for a trainee will be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly as the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education, experience, and/or certification to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification. Trainee salary will start at $42,464 and increase to $46,817 once the necessary additional education, experience, and/or certification is obtained to fully meet the minimum qualifications. Key Responsibilities: Assist DSO with dive operations by conducting a variety of supportive roles/tasks such as: Perform surface support for a variety of dive operations (majority of work);Assist DSO with efficient and effective communications; specifically, communications performed to maintain the daily and bi-weekly dive schedule – collaborating and coordinating between multiple North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island (NCARI) Departments (Dive, Husbandry, Education/Special Activities, Special Events, Operations, Public Relations, Visitor Services, Security, and Administration).Perform the following roles/tasks; Standby-diver, hookah/surface supply tender, designated person in charge (DPIC), fill-station operator, a variety of aquarium habitat and animal husbandry tasks efficient and effective management of dive program equipment and spaces (cleaning/disinfecting), timely and accurate record keeping via hard-copy forms and digital database entries, report all dive department safety/logistical/budgetary concerns to the DSO in a timely/accurate/professional manner, attend departmental meetings when directed by the DSO and produce written communications to share with the dive team, assist with mobilization/de-mobilization logistics for NCA conservation/research programs involving scientific diving operations, and participate with a variety of other NCARI community engagements as directed by the DSO and/or aquarium Director.Perform working diver roles/tasks (minimal amount of work);Average two to three 45-minute-long dives per week - maximum three dives per day in aquarium and/or offshore environments (includes diving with large sharks and variable water temperatures).Conduct a variety of aquarium habitat and animal husbandry tasks (safety diver, animal collections, and a significant amount of time spent cleaning – scrubbing/buffing habitat surfaces), conduct dive presentations (Ocean Technology Systems Guardian Full Face Mask with wired communications) for educational/special events, conduct scuba reviews for staff/volunteer (when approved and directed by the DSO), assist DSO in conducting live-action dive safety drills for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), assist with NCA conservation program scientific diving operations (offshore operations within 130’, and the potential for technical Ambient Pressure Closed Circuit Rebreather dive operations involving depths >130’ and decompression requirements).Must be able to pass the following requirements within the first week of employment; NCA/American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) diver medical assessment, Divers Alert Network (DAN) Diving First Aid for Professional Divers Certification Course, NCA/AAUS watermanship skills/skin diving/scuba diving assessments to instructor level quality.The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC, nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 2200 animals. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Qualified candidates must have or be able to: SCUBA diving instructor certification from a nationally recognized organization or member of the Recreational SCUBA Training Council (PADI, SDI, SSI, YMCA etc.), NAUI etc.One year of Scientific Diving experience required (please document your experience on your application).Experience scuba diving in various water temperatures and open ocean environment.Ability to safely lift and carry a minimum of 85 lbs.Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required as well as extended days and nights. Occasional travel is also required for Aquarium meetings.Must have a valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
