 Individuals in this class perform routine work in the operation and maintenance of electrically or manually controlled drawbridges over navigable waterways. Work assignments result from the passage of boats up and down the waterway and the necessity to keep the bridge in proper operating order. Work of individuals in this class is checked by a supervisor for efficiency of operation, adequacy of maintenance, and thoroughness of traffic counts. Individual maintains a constant watch by eye and ear for signals from boats and ships and operate the bridge for passage of such boats. Individual will record names, size, direction, number of vessels, time of passing, weather condition, and the count of vehicles stopped at each bridge opening. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency. This position will require rotating shift work. Â

This position requires the ability to use hand tools, the ability to climb to all parts of bridge structure and footings, and the ability to acquire a working knowledge of the operation and care of the machinery controlling an electrically or mechanically operated drawbridge. It also requires the ability to coordinate the traffic of on-coming boats with the flow of vehicular traffic to pass boats through the draw at a minimum inconvenience to the vehicular traffic. The position requires the ability to perform housekeeping duties of the bridge operator house and keep the bridge roadway clean of debris. The Bridge Operator must also have the ability to understand and operate within the Coast Guard Code of Federal Regulations, the ability to keep legible records and make simple reports and possess a mechanical aptitude.Â
Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM-F2413-05 will be required within 30 days of employment.Â
