This is an anticipated vacancy. This position is located at Greene Correctional Institution, an adult male minimum-custody facility housing 656 inmates in Maury, NC. Responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a minimum-custody male facility, supervising Correctional Sergeant I's and serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Assist in planning and supervising personnel actions, administrative affairs, officer's work schedule and coordinating activities involving the discipline, security, and the welfare of the inmate population. Responsibilities are primarily custodial in nature serving as shift supervisor. Other duties include coordinating actions such as employee leave requests, monthly reports, inmate concerns, and other activities relative to a correctional facility. Conducts inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are carried out properly. Reviews investigations regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares a variety of records and reports related to custody operations. Performs other related duties as required.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

"As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state's pay plans which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range(s) will be $37,782 - $66,120." Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.

Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

To Qualify For This Position, Applicants Must Document In The Work Experience Section Of The Application That They Possess ALL Of The Following

  • Supervisory skills in a prison facility
  • Knowledge of facility operations

 Management Preference:  "The Prisons' Eastern Region prefers candidates with no less than 2 years' work experience as a Correctional Sergeant.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

The Division of Institutions is one of the divisions in DAC and employs a variety of staff, operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30,000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels, which include minimum, medium, and close.  The Division of Institutions has a duty to provide a secure and safe environment along with the proper care and supervision for every individual, in our custody.Â
