- Developing, implementing, and maintaining Programs activities for offenders in one or more major and broad programs for offenders at the institution. (The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including work release, incentive wage, study release, educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling.)
- Providing transitional and re-entry programing and functions for the rehabilitation of offenders.
- Contacting community agencies regularly to enrich programs, to establish new programs, and to conduct work release investigations, if needed.
- Monitoring the effectiveness of community volunteer workers assigned to programs activities and supervising subordinate staff as needed.
- Coordinating Programs activities with custody and other facility staff.
- Effectively communicate with other staff, offenders and the general public whether verbally and/or written.
- Capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons.
- Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
- Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
- Accurately operate various office machines, prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources.
- Demonstrate and instruct offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment and supplies.
- Review analyze and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation and personal observation.
- Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
- Effectively train, observe, evaluate and supervise subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.
- Account for supplies and equipment, develop, implement and manage Correctional Programs.

Granville Correctional Institution houses close custody offenders in both single cells and dormitories. The facility houses offenders assigned to various restrictive housing and control statuses and some pre-trial safe-keepers. The prison's high-security unit houses the state's most violent and assaultive offenders. The prison offers a wide variety of educational and vocational programs and is home to one of the prison system's four schools for young offenders. Formerly known as Polk Correction Institution, the facility opened in 1997, replacing the former Polk Youth Institution on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, at the current site of the NC Museum of Art.
- Documented knowledge of internal and/or external services available to offenders.
- Documented 12 months (1 year) of correctional program experience.
- Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

- Per NC General Statute 143B-972.1 (Download PDF reader), applicants hired into a position certified as a criminal justice officer or justice officer are required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record check and enrollment in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System: Criminal Justice Record of Arrest and Prosecution Background Service (“RAP Back”).
