What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Sergeant I position at State of North Carolina?
This position is assigned to Johnston Correctional Institution located in Smithfield, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I, increasing the custody and security coverage. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Ensures that staff is fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and /or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and take
action where appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes and complaints. Prepares and reviews reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions, performs other assigned duties as required.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range will be$35,984. - $62,971. Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do no need to reapply.
