Description of Work

The Eastern NC School for the Deaf will offer a SIGN ON BONUS of up to $7500 TO Highly Qualified candidates. Highly qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching License in the desired teaching area AND Deaf / Hard of Hearing.

The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar. The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social / emotional well-being.

The ENCSD is actively seeking three Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers. This is a high school teaching position. The teacher should have an area of expertise for one of the following CTE programs of study : Agriculture : Business, Finance, and Marketing Education; Career Development; Family and Consumer Sciences; or Trade and Industrial Education. The CTE teacher shall report directly to the principal and assume responsibility to plan, implement, and provide academic and skills training to students in a particular field of expertise as outlined in the course curriculum. The CTE teacher is responsible for carrying out a career technical education program based on the NC CTE Standards that prepares students for high-skill, high-wage careers aligned with post-secondary education and consistent with regional workforce needs. The CTE teacher facilitates work-based learning and increases employment opportunities by serving as an active liaison between employers and the classroom.

This is a 10-month positions that follows the Academic Calendar.

Licensed educators at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are paid according to the appropriate placement on the NC Certified Teacher Salary Schedules. An 8% monthly teaching supplement (based on monthly salary) is also included.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

International educators are required to submit an International Education Evaluation for programs completed outside of the US and its territories.

Duties of this position include but are not limited to :

1. Planning

a. Designing the academic education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the School.

b. Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the staff.

c. Working in coordination with other basic education teachers and other departments in planning and developing the basic program.

2. Programming :

a. Preparing educational plans for students based on individually assessed needs in accordance with the School's philosophy, goals and objectives.

b. Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas to assess student progress.

c. Preparing lesson plans for each group or class assigned.

d. Developing and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.

e. Providing varied instructional techniques and media through individual and / or group sessions designed to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of the students.

f. Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment and facilities.

g. Participating in School activities, clubs and committees.

h. Assisting in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School Policies.

i. Assisting in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional

materials.

j. Providing for his / her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and / or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.

3. Monitoring and Reporting :

a. Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in his / her permanent folder.

b. Evaluating student progress on a regular basis and providing feedback to students and parents.

c. Supplying progress reports to school personnel and to parents of students as necessary and requested.

d. Completing appropriate reports for local, state, federal and educational agencies.

e. Referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.

f. Attending and participating in faculty meetings or other meetings as required.

g. Other responsibilities as directed by his / her immediate supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Must have North Carolina Teaching Certification / License or credentials to attain NC certification. PLEASE ATTACH YOUR NC DPI TEACHING LICENSE.

Preference will be given to applicants who are licensed as an educator in the State of NC and are credentialed to teach deaf and / or hard of hearing students in the content area desired. The use of American Sign Language, proficient to communicate, is also a preference but is not required.

A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social / emotional well-being.

These prospects must gain employment AND affiliate with an Educator Preparation Program (EPP) before the Eastern NC School for the Deaf can apply for the new teacher's Residency License.
