We are currently recruiting for a School Educator to function as an EC Teacher at Whitaker PRTF. The primary purpose of this position is to provide EC services to inpatient adolescent students.Â

Job duties include but are not limited to

  • Provide EC services to inpatient adolescent students. Provide diagnostic assessment of skills; interpret test results; give further diagnostic instruction for student level assignments; track daily progress notes on behavioral progress with goals specified by treatment team for medical charts; propose educational goals/strategies for school/clinical needs; lead IEP teams in developing plans for patients who require specialized educational services.
  • Â Write IEP's on assigned students and plan specific educational goals for students enrolled in assigned classes utilizing DPI guidelines, in coordination with school and clinical staff, guardians, students, and community personnel. Â
  • Provide additional support/lessons in an elective area (visual arts, music, health, or drama, etc.) to expose students to the arts, prepare 9-week progress reports/report cards; score and assess student behavior scales; maintain EC data notebook and service logs; implement DPI special education placement procedures relevant for federal/state laws for the handicapped; and contribute to continuous quality improvement. Â Â
  • Prepare/develop lesson plans daily for individuals across classes. Â Assess, record, and graph progress monitoring assignments daily; maintain attendance records of service delivery. Apply and document the behavior system in place. Provide work for substitute to use in their absence.
  • Attend staff meetings, department meetings and multi-disciplinary team meetings as needed, attend professional meetings, and in-service training. Â Consult with educational and treatment staff daily about individual student behavior/progress. Â Assist with program planning/ evaluation, curriculum development, educational materials/equipment selection, staff development, community meetings, and extra-curricular student activities, and other assigned duties.Â

The normal work hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday however flexibility is required to meet hospital needs. This is a full-time position and eligible for the full State benefits package including health insurance and retirement.

About Whitaker PRTF: Â Whitaker PRTF is an 18-bed secure psychiatric residential treatment facility operated by the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities. The facility operates 24 hours a day and provides psychiatric, nursing, psychology, social work and recreational activity services for residents which is operated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disorders and Substance Abuse Services. Â As part of the Child and Family Services Section, it provides residential care, supervision and educational services for residents with complex behavioral, emotional, psychological and neurological disorders. It also provides community liaison support services for residents and families with a staffing complement of approximately 70 full-time clinical, educational, residential and support positions. This school serves the entire state.

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they clearly possess all of the following:

  • Proficiency in computer skills to include Power School or other on-line systems.
  • Physical ADA (Americans with Disability Act) requirements will be discussed during the interview.
  • Required to have NVCI/APT de-escalation and CPR training.

Management Preferences

  • Experience working with students in a mental health setting.Â
  • Current NC Teaching License with certification in the CORE areas of Middle School and High School English Language Arts and/or Exceptional Children Programs. Candidates without certification in Core area of Middle School and High School English/Language Arts upon selection will need to complete and pass the Middle and High School English/Language Arts Praxis within specified time frame.
  • Additional Licensure in Special Education General Curriculum non expired A or G certification issues by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and experience in academic instruction with children with special needs.
  • Skills in behavioral programming and group planning.Â
  • Experience working on a treatment team that serves total ecology which includes interacting with family, local public and/or private education and mental health clinicians.Â
  • Creative and energetic teacher who will engage students through interesting, 21st century teaching techniques. Â

Bachelor's degree or above in Teaching Area with or eligible to receive a license level of one of the following: A, M, S, D.Â
