Broughton Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital serving the Western Region of North Carolina, is recruiting for full-time Forensic Psychiatrist.  Our 24-hour in-patient facility serves adolescent, adult, deaf, and geriatric patients.
 
Broughton Hospital's population includes Forensic patients whose legal status is primarily "Incapable to Proceed" to trial.  This position serves as a team leader for a multi-discipline treatment team (serving Forensic patients) to ensure quality patient care, including competency restoration treatment.  The Forensic Psychiatrist will provide competency re-evaluations to determine an individual's capacity to proceed to trial or a determination of non-restorability.
Responsibilities include:
  • Initial psychiatric assessment and diagnosis of patients upon admission, development of comprehensive treatment plans
  • Serve on medical staff committees 
  • Managing the day-to-day responsibilities of an inpatient unit to include documentation of patient progress in medical records and court papers, as well as the education of patients/families and provision of educational groups for patients. 
Under the direction of the hospital clinical director, this position is responsible for the planning and organization of clinical care and clinical staff functions. The Forensic Psychiatrist directs delivery of forensic patient care and collaborates with hospital leadership on professional disciplines to ensure that appropriate care is provided and that the hospital mission, values, and goals are transmitted to clinical staff.  

This position works with a varied group of professional disciplines and may coordinate clinical training and research efforts.  
The normal work hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. However, flexible work schedules will be considered. On-call coverage is required.

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of North Carolina
Management prefers candidates with the following:
  • Professional experience leading and collaborating on an interdisciplinary team to provide integrated, comprehensive patient care
  • Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of psychiatry residency (or anticipated completion before job commencement)
  • Professional knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients, as credentialed by the Medical Staff
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry

Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF).  With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. **Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
  • A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).
An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:
  1. The employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);
  2. The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;
  3. Or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
This Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. Additional information regarding the Sign-on Policy can be found here.
