Description of Work
The NC Department of Military & Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is tasked with 23 specific functions that involve working with federal, state, local, regional and industry partners to support activities at North Carolina military installations and improve economic outcomes and the quality of life for our military and veteran communities. The Department has two distinct divisions of Veterans Affairs and Military Affairs.
In accordance with Chapter 143, General Statues of North Carolina, the Veterans Affairs Division will assist Veterans, their families and their dependents in obtaining or maintaining privileges, rights and benefits to which they are entitled under Federal State or Local laws. The Military Affairs Division will liaison between the federal, state, local, regional and industry partners and the various military communities in NC.
Primary purpose of the position
The North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is seeking applicants for a Grounds Worker I with our Veterans Affairs Division. This position will perform a variety of support activities involved in burial operations for our State Veterans Cemetery located in Fort Bragg, NC (Cumberland County).
Tasks will include mowing and trimming several acres of cemetery lawn areas as well as around graves, headstones or grave markers. Position will edge cemetery property driveways and walkways and vacuum, sweep, or rake graves and cemetery grounds for leaf and trash removal. Position will water cemetery lawns, grave sites, shrubs, trees, flowerbeds and ground coverings; operate tractors with attachments and / or specific equipment to thatch, aerate, seed and fertilize cemetery lawn areas and grave sites.
Position duties will also include the planting and cultivating of flowers, shrubs and trees; repairing sunken graves; cutting and removing dead, hazardous or unsightly trees, branches, shrubs or foliage as well as picking up and hauling loads of dirt, rocks and / or trash (i.e. ground debris, floral arrangements and decorations).
Position will be responsible for performing scheduled maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment and work in burial operations such as assisting in the operation of a backhoe to open and close graves, burying and / or the removal of caskets and installing headstones or grave markers.
Position works with insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers. Position will be trained in the use and operation of backhoe equipment. Position will install headstones and grave markers. The work for this position is performed in an outdoor environment and in all kinds of extreme weather conditions.
A normal 40 hours work week (8am-5pm) is associated with the position; however, workdays will vary due to cemetery requirements. The duties and responsibilities of this position will require some weekend, after hours and holiday work to allow for burials, required ceremonies or to accommodate cemetery operation hours.
Must have physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Documented experience with grounds keeping and horticultural practices and the ability to determine the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds and shrubs in good condition.
- Documented experience using a tractors and lawnmowers (both riding and push).
- Documented experience in planting, cultivate and care for greenery and have previous experience in operating lawn care equipment as well as having either experience or ability to apply chemicals related to plant care.
- Documented experience in the application of insecticides, pesticides and fertilizer.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Education and / or experience in grounds work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade and equivalent to two years of experience in planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants, and grasses; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
