Position: Office of Strategic Initiatives - Corridor Development Engineer Intern

Department: Office of Strategic Initiatives – Division 10

Location: 12033 E. Independence Blvd., Suite G, Charlotte, NC 28105

Internship Duration: 10-week internship (May 27-August 1, 2025)

Position Overview

The Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI) is a forward-thinking department within the Division of Transportation focused on driving innovative solutions for infrastructure development and operational improvements. Dedicated to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of North Carolina’s transportation systems, OSI works on strategic planning, corridor development, and project management to support the state’s growth and connectivity. By leveraging data-driven approaches and cross-disciplinary collaboration, the department plays a key role in shaping transportation policies and delivering impactful projects that meet the needs of both citizens and stakeholders. Interns within OSI have the unique opportunity to contribute to these initiatives, gaining invaluable insight into the transportation industry while honing professional and technical skills.

The Office of Strategic Initiatives – Division 10 is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated intern to assist with corridor development projects. This role is an excellent opportunity for students from any academic background to gain hands-on experience in data management, project coordination, and professional communication in a collaborative team environment.

The intern will work closely with experienced engineers and staff on various aspects of corridor development, providing valuable exposure to facility review processes, data analysis, and project planning.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Data Collection & Information Management:
    • Gather, review, and organize relevant data to support corridor development initiatives.
    • Ensure data accuracy and compile insights into actionable reports.
    • Use Excel for data tracking and analysis.
  2. Facility Review & Development:
    • Assist in evaluating facilities within corridor areas to ensure they meet development requirements.
    • Document findings and contribute to recommendations for facility improvements.
  3. Project & Time Management:
    • Support the team in managing timelines for ongoing corridor development projects.
    • Develop personal time management skills to meet deadlines effectively.
  4. Presentation Planning & Delivery:
    • Prepare professional presentations using PowerPoint to communicate project updates and findings.
    • Assist in organizing materials for internal meetings and stakeholder discussions.
  5. Collaboration & Professional Development:
    • Engage in daily interactions with staff to understand work habits and contribute to team culture.
    • Participate in weekly meetings to track progress, receive feedback, and refine project outcomes.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including:
    • Excel: Data entry, analysis, and organization.
    • PowerPoint: Creating visually appealing and informative presentations.
    • Word: Documentation and report writing.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

  • Academic Requirements: Open to students from all academic majors.
  • Location: Must be able to commute to 12033 E. Independence Blvd., Suite G, Charlotte, NC 28105.

Professional Development

  • Gain hands-on experience in corridor development, project management, and professional presentation skills.
  • Develop workplace habits and a deep understanding of organizational culture through daily engagement with team members.
  • Weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisors will ensure personalized feedback and guidance.

  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
