Are you a college student (or recent college graduate) looking for Human Resources Internship for the Summer of 2025? If so, continue reading to learn more about this exciting opportunity with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS). 

This internship is located within the Human Resources section of the North Carolina National Guard, a division of DPS. The North Carolina National Guard currently employs over 300 permanent and temporary employees. Job duties will include a variety of human resources projects. The intern will have exposure to a Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Specific job duties will include: 
  • Providing information by answering communications; referring special communications to appropriate person.
  • Maintaining human resources personnel and medical records.
  • Maintaining manager and employee confidence by keeping human resources information confidential.
  • Updating job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Accomplishing human resources and organization mission by completing tasks as needed.
  • Managing HR records including applications, applicant logs, and employee forms.
  • Responding to HR-related queries within the company.
  • Assisting with the distribution of training material.
  • Assisting with new employee onboarding.
  • Contributing to recruitment efforts
  • Assisting HR Manager and staff with day-to-day HR operations. 

This internship is expected to start on May 19, 2025, and continue through July 25, 2025. The work schedule is Hybrid, part-time (up to 30 hours per week), Monday -Friday, 8am-5pmThe rate of pay is $18.00 per hour. We value our employees and are committed to providing flexibility in work schedules. This position qualifies for teleworking on a part-time basis as part of the State Telework Program.

The mission of DPS is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people of North Carolina through prevention, protection, and preparation. DPS is comprised of approximately 6,000 permanent positions and nearly 13,000 NC National Guard soldiers and airmen.  To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:? 

 
  • College coursework in Human Resources or Business Administration and/or human resources experience.

Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with tact and discretion;
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely; to exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions within area of responsibility;
  • Ability to learn and apply rules, procedures, and practices for various human resources management activities or personnel actions.

This internship is for applicants currently pursuing a degree in Human Resources or Business Administration.  Recent college graduates (within the last 6 months) will also be considered.

Military Experience  

  • Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that includes Character of Discharge - Member 4 or Service 2 form) to the application.
  • Applicants seeking National Guard Preference: 
    • current member of the North Carolina National Guard in good standing must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS)
    • A former member of the North Carolina National Guard who served for at least 6 years and were discharged under honorable conditions, must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
