Primary Purpose of this Position:  

Have you ever wanted to work at a zoo? Want to be part of a dynamic and unique organization that saves wildlife and wild places? The North Carolina Zoo is looking to hire an Internal Communications Coordinator. This position will perform a range of communications and marketing-related work to increase employee engagement and satisfaction and help promote the Zoo through a variety of mediums, including print and online. The role will help collaboratively create and drive key messages to employees and internal stakeholders at the Zoo.     This position involves planning, developing, executing and evaluating communication strategies and plans that promote the Zoo, its employees and its programs to both internal and external audiences. Position requires strong writing and editing skills and the ability to adhere and follow brand standards for an organization and be expected to be comfortable with public speaking. Position will reach out and grow visitation and brand awareness with previously marginalized populations.   The Zoo is a seven-day a week, 363-day a year operation and requires communications to be ready at any given time, for the public and internal staff. Position will serve on the official public relations officer team.   

Position Requirements:

  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Requires working a flexible schedule based on the Zoo's social media content needs.
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to lift and exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and ability to lift, carry, push or pull objects with or without an accommodation, negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects/priorities simultaneously with tight deadlines.
  • Must have good interpersonal relations/teamwork skills.
  • Must be able to rapidly adjust work schedules to meet the needs of projects and crisis situations

  • Demonstrated experience in writing and editing communications for a variety of platforms – newsletters, social media, website, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience disseminating accurate information to employees and internal stakeholders through a variety of media, such as print, video, and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and creating email marketing programs such as Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, Emma, et al.
  • Demonstrated experience working with internal collaboration tools, such as SharePoint, Microsoft Teams and/or building Intranets.
  • Demonstrated experience with speaking with the media/spokesperson duties.

Management Preferences:

 

  • Experience with graphics software such as photo-editing and vector programs 
  • Experience with Diversity and Inclusion programs
  • Experience implementing staff/internal recognition and appreciation programs.
  • Experience in journalism and AP style

Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, journalism, English, 

OR 

related field from an appropriately accredited institution;

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. 

 

Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
