This is a 11-month position paid over 12 months
Offering a $7500 sign on bonus, contingent upon availability of funds, for Skilled, Highly Qualified teachers. Skilled, Highly Qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching license with VI (Visually Impaired) endorsement(s) and as is applicable to the student population/classroom served.
The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) provides residential and day educational programs to blind and/or visually impaired students, ages five to 22 years. Governor Morehead School strives to offer specialized educational opportunities, community outreach, and an immersive environment for North Carolina students with visual impairments and additional disabilities. Through unique and expert instruction, GMS creates a dynamic and inclusive environment for students to reach their highest potential in developing knowledge, skills, confidence, and values that will support them as independent, life-long learners to contribute to our global society.

GMS serves students across the state of North Carolina through K-12 enrollment, outreach short-term events, and summer school programs. The campus is in Raleigh, NC. We are actively recruiting for a Highly Qualified School Educator/Language Arts Teacher.
The School is currently accepting applications for a School Educator I, working title: Middle School Language Arts Teacher. This position performs a variety of duties related to the instruction of students with visual impairments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide individual and small group instruction in the applicable academic area as well as any non-academic areas, if necessary, which may be addressed by the IEP for students.
- Implement assigned curricula and daily prepared lessons.
- Utilization of acquired and accumulated materials, resources, and manipulatives as well as assessing and documenting students' progress and performance.
- Perform related activities such as: planning instructional activities; preparing IEP's, attending to individual needs relating to student progress, performance, or behavior.
- Preparing report cards.
- Classroom supervision and instructing teaching assistants when appropriate and necessary.
- Participating in school related activities.
- Attending committee meetings and in–service workshops.
- Planning and implementing field trips.
- Administer formal and informal test/assessments.
- Regular and detailed communication with families regarding student progress, class activities, and general information specific to the student’s performance in class.
- Communicate with other programs (residential, student support, etc.) on & off campus.
- Serve as liaison between the residential and academic staff, between academic staff and parents, between academic staff and local educational agencies, etc. and serve as resource person for other schools.
- Administering, proctoring, compiling, state mandated tests, portfolios, & inventories.

The employee must be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of:
- The language arts curriculum in grades 9-12 and/or in grades 6-8.
- Classroom/instructional strategies and management.
- Current strategies for student assessment, goal setting, and evaluation of student growth.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
- Applicants who have VI Certification (or willing to obtain)
- Special Education: General Curriculum on Licensure (or willing to obtain)
- Background in teaching students with disabilities.
- Some knowledge of IEP process.
Valid NC Teacher's License (or eligible for such); must be certified to teach English/Language Arts for students in using the middle school ELA curriculum.
