NCDAC is excited to invite motivated and enthusiastic summer interns to join our team and make an impact across our diverse divisions. As an intern, you’ll play a hands-on role in supporting our division leaders, tackling meaningful administrative tasks, and contributing to special projects that influence our day-to-day operations.

- Proficiency in administrative tasks (scheduling, data entry, document management)

- Currently enrolled junior or senior level standing at an accredited college/university with a major in an accredited 4-year degree or master’s level in, Business Administration, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Supply Chain Management, Accounting, DATA Analysis, Pre-Law, Marketing, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Environmental) Human Resources or related field.
- Applicants must carry a 2.0 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years old by June 1, 2025.
- Applicants must be continuing their education for the duration of their participation in the internship or on break (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer).
- Applicants must be willing and able to work part-time throughout the duration of the internship.
- Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.

The Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. - The Combined Records section is responsible for the development and maintenance of offender records and the calculation of sentences for all offenders who are incarcerated in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction facilities.
- The Internal Audit section of the Department of Adult Correction is a key unit that conducts thorough examinations, analyses, and appraisals of activities within the organization.
- The Legislative Affairs Office of the Department of Adult Correction serves as the liaison between the Department, the Governor’s Office, and the North Carolina General Assembly. Legislative Affairs is responsible for reviewing proposed legislation, recommending new legislative actions, and ensuring that the critical needs of the agency are coordinated with the appropriate stakeholders.
- The Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT) is the cornerstone of training for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction workforce. Our team of 101 instructors and support personnel delivers basic training to correction and probation/parole officers, as well as specialized classes, such as firearms, leadership, and instructor training.
- PREA is a section assigned to enforce the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 aligning with our mission to promote public safety by ensuring a fair and humane system. The Department of Adult Correction has a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct between employees and offenders. We support staff in providing professional services to offenders.
- The Division of Community Supervision (DCS) is responsible for overseeing supervision of adult offenders on probation, parole, or post-release. The DCS mission is to ensure public safety while helping offenders make positive changes and successfully complete their supervision.
- The Division of Comprehensive Health Services is dedicated to providing evidence-based, compassionate, and constitutionally consistent medical care to all offenders in custody. Their goal is to ensure that all offenders receive full-spectrum medical care from the time of entry until their release.
- Rehabilitation and Reentry is a division within the Department of Adult Correction. The division provides the continuity of services to individuals who have been incarcerated or are transitioning to the community. Division staff work collaboratively with internal prison staff, Community Supervision (PPO) staff and Local Reentry Councils by developing, implementing, and monitoring correctional and reentry interventions for justice involved individuals.
- The Division of Education Services provides a wide range of services to offenders in every state-run facility. Services include basic education, high school equivalency preparation, life skills, career, vocational, and postsecondary degree programs.
- The Special Operations and Intelligence Unit (SOIU) is solely responsible for managing operational procedures and processing intelligence that affects the general public, staff, and offenders.
- The Investigations Section is a critical unit that works relentlessly to provide support in both internal and external investigations. Their purview includes investigating claims and complaints of individuals or groups suspected of having ties with international and domestic terrorist organizations, detecting, and prosecuting all forms of white-collar crimes and public corruption matters, and enforcing state and federal laws regarding narcotics, firearms, and other controlled substances.
- The Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission is the agency responsible for releasing offenders under eligibility guidelines established in North Carolina General Statutes. In cases where the Commission has discretionary release authority, this mission is accomplished through thorough analyses to determine when and under what circumstances it is in society's best interests to allow an offender to be released from prison and serve a portion of the sentence under supervision in the community.
- The Support Services Division manages various operations across agency facilities statewide, which include maintaining facilities, managing fleets, and ensuring offenders receive proper nutrition. The departments under this division are Central Engineering, Central Supply Warehouse, Facility Management, Fleet Management, Food and Nutrition Services, Radio and Transportation Communications, and Sustainability and Energy Management.
- The Correction Enterprises division is committed to providing technical and behavioral job training to offenders, aiming to enhance their skills and increase their chances of successful reintegration into society upon release. They achieve this goal by operating a self-sufficient business that mirrors a real-life work environment, which exposes offenders to practical work experience, and helps them develop positive work ethics and attitudes.
- The Division of Institutions employs over 19,000 staff, operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30,000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels, which include minimum, medium, and close. The Division of Institutions has a duty to provide a secure and safe environment along with the proper care and supervision for every individual, in our custody.
- The Division of Human Resources plays a crucial role in ensuring that the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has a robust and skilled workforce. The division provides comprehensive personnel services to all divisions/units throughout the department. Central HR handles a wide range of responsibilities related to staffing and recruitment, benefits, policy administration, classification and compensation, organization development, data & analytics, performance, employee relations/equal employment opportunities, and safety administration.
- The Victim Support Services section offers post-conviction notifications and services to crime victims and their families.
- The S.H.I.E.L.D. section exists to improve the overall health and performance of the correctional workforce by providing confidential, non-emergent support services to DAC staff. These include a combination of behavioral health and peer support initiatives focused on wellness to enhance professional and personal success.
- The Office of Employee Engagement section is intended to serve all NCDAC staff in developing and implementing programs, and/or initiatives that support all employees to feel engaged and valued in the work each staff member is assigned.
- The Controller’s Office assumes oversight responsibility for the financial operations pertaining to the Department of Adult Correction accounting. This encompasses the management of accounts payable/receivables, the preparation of financial reports, the administration of fixed asset accounting, the processing of payroll, the supervision of purchasing/WEX cards, tax management, travel-related expenditures, and other business payments and reimbursements.
