The Eastern NC School for the Deaf will offer a SIGN ON BONUS of up to $7500 TO Highly Qualified candidates.  Highly qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching License in the desired teaching area AND Deaf/ Hard of Hearing.

The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar.  The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language.    The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.


The School is actively recruiting for a School Educator, working title: Pre School Teacher.   The primary purpose of this position is to provide academic instructional activities with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in the desired content area, working directly under the School Principal. This position vacancy will remain open until filled.

This is a 10-month position that follows the Academic Calendar

Licensed educators at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are paid according to the appropriate placement on the NC Certified Teacher Salary Schedules.  An 8% monthly teaching supplement (based on monthly salary) is also included.

The primary duties of this position are to provide academic instruction for preschool students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication with a residential education setting.  This position will be responsible for individual and small group instruction in academic areas as well as any non-academic areas, if necessary, which may be addressed by the IEP and in the preschool curriculum.  Effective instruction requires becoming knowledgeable about and implementing assigned curricula, implementation of daily prepared lessons, utilization of acquired and accumulated materials, resources, and manipulative as well as assessing and documenting students' progress and performance.  Plan and implement activities which effectively address the lesson's objectives and promotes kindergarten readiness.  Model conversation, manners, clean-up activities and communication skills for demonstrating appropriate social and interpersonal behavior. Collaborate in development of age appropriate physical, mental and and social skill development.  Organize age appropriate indoor and outdoor leaning activities. Monitor the progress of each child through language samples, observation checklist and other appropriate assessment tools. 
 
The ideal candidate will have an active NC Dept of Public Instruction Certified Teaching license and be highly qualified for Birth-K, have a Deaf and Hard of Hearing endorsement and have prior experience collaborating with teachers, clinical professionals and administration to address student needs, department needs and make curriculum adaptations, have prior experience advising parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvements and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment, administering, proctoring, complying, submitting all state mandated test, portfolios, and inventories and be familiar with state policies/procedures for testing.Knowledge of child development and ability to develop rapport with children
Perform simple mathematical computations
General knowledge of state and federal laws, division and school policies
Considerable knowledge of word processing skills, spread sheeting, and database creation and maintenance

Bachelor’s degree in education with appropriate subject area. Must have North Carolina Teaching Certification/License or credentials to attain NC certification. PLEASE ATTACH YOUR NC DPI TEACHING LICENSE.  

International educators are required to submit an International Education Evaluation for programs completed outside of the US and its territories.

Preference will be given to applicants who are licensed as an educator in the State of NC and are credentialed to teach deaf and/or hard of hearing students in the content area desired.  The use of American Sign Language, proficient to communicate, is also a preference but is not required.

All certified educators working at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are required to be paid from the NC Dept of Public Instruction’s Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets a minimum pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.  In addition to base salary, the ENCSD also pays an additional reoccurring monthly supplement of 8% of base salary.

The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language.     A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County.  The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.

Applicants seeking National Guard preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS) if they are a current member of the NC National Guard.  If an applicant is a former NC National Guard Member who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, they must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22 along with their State application.  

Applicants with degrees not conferred at a United States college or university must attach a degree verification that their degree is equivalent to a similar degree form a US institution.
