Primary Purpose Of Position

Do you have a passion for science and North Carolina's natural beauty? The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking two (2) Regional Biologist as part of the Natural Resource Program’s team of professional resource managers. The Natural Resources Program collects and uses biological information to provide scientific and technical support to state park superintendents, planners, and engineers to ensure the long-term protection and sound management of natural and cultural resources in the state parks system. The Natural Resources Program also leads the Division in ecological management decisions on fire, forestry, ecological restoration, invasive species, and protection of rare and endangered species.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Provide expert guidance and assistance to all state parks and natural areas in the fields of natural resource management.
  • Responsible for rare species protection, prescribed fire, invasive species control, forestry, forest and steam restoration.
  • Responsible for setting objectives, negotiating contracts, managing budgets, training staff, and supervising the work of others.
  • Communicate with park staff and outside organizations including federal, state, and local government agencies for all matters related to protection of park natural resources.

Position/Physical Requirements

  • Typical work schedule is Monday to Friday 8:00 am -5:00 pm.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, 20 lbs of force frequently, and 10 lbs of force with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work requires a variety of physical tasks, visual acuity, and is subject to a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Must be available to work after hours, weekend, and holidays when necessary.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to perform job duties are performed in both inside and outside environmental conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience to collect, review and/or interpret environmental scientific data.
  • Demonstrated experience of management of natural resource-based parks, natural areas, and/or nature preserves.
  • Demonstrated experience of conservation principles for the protection of park resources.
  • Demonstrated software of GIS software.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution;

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
