Description of Work

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.


The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Office of Conservation Policy and Analysis is responsible for informing, recommending, and developing statewide public policy and regulations for the agency. This office engages agency constituents and the public and seeks to understand their perspectives on the State's natural resources, wildlife management, and agency function. They then use this qualitative and quantitative data to examine current and future agency programs, policies, and regulations, to improve the chances of successful outcomes. The office is comprised of five main components: Policy Development, Program Analysis and Evaluation (Agency Relevancy), Rulemaking, Community Engagement, and Social Science.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for the Social Scientist (Social Research Specialist II) for the Office of Conservation Policy and Analysis. The Social Scientist is responsible for assisting in the planning and conducting of social science research to understand the attitudes, opinions and values towards wildlife resource management and conservation as well as the agency’s current and proposed policies, conservation strategies and programs. It is responsible for designing and reviewing social science studies, implementing methodologies for data collection and statistical analysis of data to meet project objectives, managing research projects, data analysis and management, research reporting and dissemination, and general agency social science guidance.


A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week. This position is based in the WRC Headquarters in Raleigh, NC (Wake Co.).

Qualified Applicants must possess:

  • Knowledge of wildlife, natural resources, and/or recreation topics and issues;
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, interpreting and reporting social science data;
  • Experience managing a research project;
  • Experience facilitating focus groups, interviews, and/or meetings.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned to the position from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of related experience;
