This position serves as a Transportation Supervisor I in the Roadside Environmental Unit located within Division 5. In this position, you will supervise one or more crews and help plan, organize, and schedule work activities, materials, and equipment needs for crews. Work activities include, but are not limited to, pesticide applications to highway rights-of-way, seeding and mulching, tree pruning/removal, and the installation and maintenance of plant beds and the NC Wildflower Program throughout Division 5. You will be required to ensure pesticide applications adhere to NCDA Pesticide rules and regulations and established NCDOT policies and procedures. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate time sheets by tracking man hours, equipment hours, inventory used, location and work accomplished; adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; performing daily safety meeting with crews; and conducting performance reviews. This position must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish standard work assignments. You will assist higher level supervisors with investigating and answering concerns from the public and recommend solutions. You will also be responsible for snow and ice removal at rest areas and on state maintained road system; inspecting contract crews performing landscape operations for NCDOT; and installing and maintaining storm water devices. Duties and functions must be performed with minimal direct supervision.

- Experience in applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques
- Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations
- Experience in work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policies and procedures
- Experience in record keeping, including tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of material used
- Experience in scheduling work for and supervising multiple work crews
Additional Expectations:
This position requires a Public Pesticide Operator Classification Pesticide License issued by North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services with categories for Right-of-Way and Ornamental & Turf required or ability to obtain within six months from date of hire. You must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Skill in the safe use and care of assigned equipment, hand and power tools is necessary. You must be able to communicate effectively with the general public, co-workers, and other agency personnel. You should have a good working knowledge of basic computer operations and be familiar with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Google Maps (or other internet mapping applications). Physical activities required are standing, walking, the ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain and the ability to lift and safely carry up to 50 pounds. You must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.
