This posting represents two (2) Transportation Worker II vacant positions located in the Surry County Bridge Maintenance Unit in Division 11. Positions 60026304 and 60026312 will be filled from the same pool of applicants. All applicants will be considered for both positions.


Positions are located in the Surry County Bridge Maintenance Unit in Division 11 as a Transportation Worker II. Work includes, but is not limited to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts, and pipes. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. Employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, with hand and power tools and various other pieces of equipment. Employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. Employee will be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, employee may be required to work at night or on weekends. Employee must be able to train lower level workers. Work includes a variety of functions including equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation, and maintenance of erosion control. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.


Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (Asphalt Distributor, Asphalt Mixer, Asphalt Patcher, Crack Sealing Machine, Ditching Machine, Force Feed Loader, Front End Loader, Lube Truck, Asphalt Maintainer, Post Driver, Skid Steer, Street Sweeper, Tandem Dump Truck, Tractor "A" Boom Mower, Truck w/Aerial Device).
  • Experience in operating at least 1 of the following pieces of Bridge Category "D" equipment: Lattice Crane, Rubber Tire Excavator, Track Excavator, Tug Boat.
  • Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculate quantities and placing orders and plan reading and layout directing drilling and cutting of holes, direct erection of steel beams and bridge components.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License and no restrictions. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship). Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time in and around steep and uneven terrain. This position responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Necessary Special Requirements                                                                                                                                                                                                      

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
