All recommended salaries are based on each applicant's qualifying education and related experience in combination with the position's budgeted salary. The maximum hiring rate for this position is $51,743.Â
This position is located in the Union County Bridge Maintenance Unit. Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts, and pipes within Division 10. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. Position will require climbing, bending and walking on uneven terrain. Employee will be required to work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. Qualified individual should be familiar with and/or able to learn, but not limited to: carpentry skills, welding, pipe fitting, structure painting, machine operation, inspection of various materials that compromise state bridges, large pipe or culverts, utilizing small hand tools and power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency.Â

Safety toe shoes are required. Must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required.  As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Â
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

- Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
- Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones
- Working knowledge of Advanced Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal
- Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
