This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position in the Rowan County Maintenance unit. The work of this position is related to the maintenance and repair of state-maintained roads within Rowan County. Duties will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of ways of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes, but is not limited to, an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Safety toed shoes required.
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. Â An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. Â In order to obtain an inmate card, applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. Â
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
