This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position in the Walnut Cove Bridge Maintenance Unit. This position will perform manual, and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. Work will include the utilization of small hand tools, carpentry tools, placing and finishing of concrete, two-way radio communication, chainsaw operation and an introductory level erosion control. The selected applicant will Operate a dump truck to secure and haul loads, air compressors, forklifts, vibratory rollers, front end loaders, backhoe, lowboy, and truck mounted cranes. Additional responsibilities will include rigging loads for lifting, tying reinforcement steel and conducting flagging operations. The selected applicant will be expected to install pipe and perform drainage maintenance, carpentry work to include forming and layout, cut and fit structural steel to close tolerances, plan development and layout of traffic control in work zones with two lane roads, install and maintain erosion control devices, and transport materials or equipment utilizing a truck and trailer. These and all additional duties will be assigned and supervised by a Transportation Supervisor. POS # 60026229.

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following

  • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures)
  • Working knowledge of standard Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: Â backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
  • Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques

Additional Expectations

General skills in a wide variety of functional areas including pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection. Repair and replacement of culverts, bridges, large diameter pipe, bulkheads, and pile clusters. Sandblasting, lead paint removal, painting, steel fabrication and straightening of steel beams. Trenching & shoring and bushing & shrubbing. Physical activities required are standing, walking in uneven terrain, climbing, lifting a minimum of 50lbs., talking and hearing. Also exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Must not be afraid of heights. Safety toe shoes required.Â

This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. Â An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. Â

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
