This posting may be used to fill multiple Transportation Worker III (60019158, 60019174, 60019212, 60019195) positions with Durham County Maintenance.
Position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Durham County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties.
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and experience in installation of traffic control
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer or sweeper
Additional Expectations:
Must be able to legally operate a Class A motor vehicle with N endorsement and/or perform flagging operation to safely guide traffic through work zones; receive and give effective written and oral communications; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather; ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety-toe shoes are required.
Pre-employment drug testing is required. Legal operation of Class A motor vehicle with N endorsement can be achieved through on-the-job training within 360 days of employment start date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release of form (ALCDGR-01) and a back-ground statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past 2 years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
