This work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts, and pipes within Division 5. This position will report to the Henderson Bridge Maintenance Office. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. You will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. You will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. You must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. You could possibly be exposed to briar's, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. You may serve as a Crew Leader in the absence of other Supervisors or Crew Leader. Work requires journey level skills in a variety of functional areas including equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation, and maintenance of erosion control. You must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship). When traffic volumes dictate, you may be required to work at night or on weekends. When inclement weather occurs, you may be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process.
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following
- Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures
- Experience in at least one piece of Bridge Category B equipment: Crack Sealing Machine, Front End Loader, Skid Steer, Tandem Dump Truck, Truck w/Aerial Device
- Experience in at least one piece of Bridge Category C equipment: Backhoe, Tractor Trailer (Lowboy), Truck Mounted Crane, Hydra-platform Lift
- Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices.
- Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones.
You must safely be able to lift /carry 50 lbs. You must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Â Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Â Pre-employment drug testing required. Â As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2413-05 required for employment.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Â
