This position is located in the Cumberland County Maintenance Unit. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt, salt brine application, brine plant operation, and performing basic computer and iPad functions.
- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
Additional Expectations:
Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances. The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions are required. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils. Visual acuity is required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
