This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Lexington Bridge Maintenance Unit. This position will perform Manual, and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. The selected applicant must have a working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures. Work will include a wide variety of skills utilized in the functional areas including pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, equipment operation, contract inspection, repair of bridges, culverts, large pipe, and headwalls. Additional duties will include sandblasting and painting, demolition work, trenching and shoring, lead paint removal and steel fabrication and straightening of steel beams, as well as oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG and TIG welding. The selected applicant will be expected to have experience in work zone safety traffic control and flagging operations. Installation and maintenance of erosion control Work will be assigned and supervised by a Transportation Supervisor. Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
- Demonstrated ability supervising and training others in equipment operations.
- Working experience as the Lead Worker on a crew without supervision.
- Working knowledge of the principles of and methods of oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG and TIG welding.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: Truck Mounted Crane, Backhoe, Tractor Trailer (Lowboy), Hydra-Platform, JLG Articulating Man Lift, Track Excavator, Lattice Crane
Additional Expectations:
Working safely is a condition of employment. Operate State vehicle and assigned equipment effectively. Follow instructions to complete assigned tasks without supervision. Use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities. Physical activities required are standing, walking in uneven terrain, climbing, lifting a minimum of 50lbs., talking and hearing. Also exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Must not be afraid of heights. Ability to obtain welding certification through On the Job training within 360 days of hire date. Safety-toe shoes required.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
